Caerhays Castle has a rich history dating back to the Early Middle Ages. Originally owned by the Arundell family, it passed through various hands until John Bettesworth-Trevanion built the present castle in the early 19th century. After a period of neglect, it was purchased by Michael Williams II, whose family undertook extensive repairs. The estate eventually passed to John Charles Williams, an avid plantsman who filled the castle garden with exotic acquisitions.
The castle’s exterior, resembling a Norman fortress, features a grand entrance and well-preserved rooms. Several original structures, including an ancient chapel and a walkway called Watchhouse Walk, can still be found. Recognized for its historical significance, Caerhays Castle and associated buildings are Grade I listed.
