Fowey is a small port which still is busy to this day, providing scenic moorings for leisure boats; the harbour is flanked by fourteenth-century blockhouses, one in Fowey and one of the opposite sides of the river in Polruan, from which chains were suspended to close the harbour mouth way back when. You can still visit the Polruan blockhouse but unfortunately, the Fowey blockhouse is closed but there still remains a good view from Fowey. In the second World War, Fowey was the main town for air-sea rescue and also one of the places from which D-Day invasions were launched.
Polurrian Beach is located just south of Poldhu Cove and just north of Mullion Cove, you can get the best view of this beach from the headland inbetween Mullion Cove. The beach at low tide is a vast golden sandy beach with high cliffs either side providing shelter away from the breeze but the beach is west facing meaning you will get the Atlantic winds coming at you and the surf here can get quite good depending on what the swell and weather is doing. During the summer months there is a lifeguard service – but only at weekends. So if you do fancy a dip take care or make sure it is on a weekend during the summer holidays.
Longships Lighthouse is located in West Cornwall offshore from the famous Lands end attraction. This lighthouse has stood the test of strength and resilience since 1875, battled heavy storms and many ships have been stranded amongst the rocks in stormy seas.
