During the summer months, there are plenty of festivals and events going on like the balloon festival, gig-racing for men and women, surfing, surf life-saving events, and much more.
Surrounding Newquay are places like Lappa Valley Steam Railway which runs along Cornwall’s oldest railway, built back in 1849 to transport ore from East Wheal Rose mine to Newquay Harbour and much later was part of the Great Western Railway. Just past Crantock is the famous Healey’s Cider Farm where you can try Cornwall’s favourite cider, Rattler, you can also pay a fee to go look round the factory where it’s made. North of Newquay just in St Eval is the 1.5km go karting track which is great for family fun, with 3 tracks, main track, family track, and junior track, catering for everyone that visits!
Newquay is home to many beautiful golden sandy beaches with arguably the best beer gardens backing on to them. The most famous beach in Newquay is Fistral, known as the mecca of surfing in Cornwall this beach is full of surfers in the summer but there is still a great expanse of beach which the family can enjoy and backed on to it are a bunch of great restaurants that serve up great food and cold drinks. Another beach in the area is known for its island house, probably one of the most photographed houses in Cornwall, this house sits above the Towan Beach which is a great expanse of golden sandy beach just next to Newquay Harbour, great for the family and lovely waves coming into the beach makes this one so relaxing to have a good beach day. Other beaches in walking distance are Great Western Beach, Lusty Glaze Beach, Crantock Beach, Porth Beach, and Whipsiderry Beach.
Newquay Surfing
Newquay is known as the mecca of surfing, every year it hosts Boardmasters surfing championships, held at Fistral Beach which attracts surfers from all over the globe. The main town beaches are Towan, Great Western, Lusty Glaze, and Tolcarne, all of which are reasonably sheltered and safe for swimming and sun-worshipping. Other things to do in the Newquay area visit the aquarium and Newquay Zoo which attracts more than 250,000 visitors each year, set over ten acres with sub-tropical lakeside gardens with many of the world’s endangered species. Other animals such as red pandas, black apes, zebras, antelope, and many more exotic animals.
